That fall, California was hit by a series of strikes by agricultural workers demanding higher pay. Cotton growers—who had responded to the dire economic times by slashing pay for pickers to less than a third of what it had been in the late 1920s—were hard hit. Cotton production had expanded exponentially in the San Joaquin Valley during the 1920s.
